This is a wall-hung walnut reliquary that is lined with ear plugs. This was originally conceived to hold a long-retired cell phone that I had used after moving to Italy years ago. The phone became a great paradoxical symbol to me of opportunity and limitation as I relied on it for work to formulate my new life. However, my Italian language skills were in their infancy and communication with strangers by phone proved extremely difficult and was once a source of great terror for me. I very much needed that phone to ring for my livelihood but received it with dread when it did. Ultimately my language skills via phone became proficient but the memory of feelings of being gagged and unable to verbally express die hard. It seemed like a nice way to memorialize the experience.
